The main difference between the paid programs CorelDraw or Illustrator and the freeware Inkscape is that Inkscape has an inefficient file format. Complex files that take CoreDraw a second and a half to open using the Corel CDR format might take Inkscape 45 seconds or more using its SVG format. But you cannot beat the price of Inkscape.

Here is a procedure you might use to create your own sun compass template from scratch. First, lay out a vertical line.

Rotate a copy 90°.

Now you can lay out your guidelines to define the center of your drawing.

Rotate everything by 1°.

Now, make 3 copies, each rotated by a further 1°.

Select all, then make copies, each rotated by 5° until you fill in your circle.

Draw a circle out from the center, and fill it with white. Define the outline as either [null] or white.

Select the line at 356° and make a copy, rotating it by 1°.

Make copies of this line at 10° intervals.

Draw another circle, this one somewhat smaller than the first.

Select the line at 1° and make a copy, rotating it by 1°. Then make further copies of this line, rotating each by 10°, and create another circle, filled with white.

All this has taken you 5 or 10 minutes. Now you can carry on with the more time consuming task of labelling your degree marks. Use a similar technique for laying out the hour lines for your sun compass, except that you need to create a pie-shaped white object to blank out the bottoms of line lines from 8:15 AM to 3:45 PM.

If you have not rotated text before, you can use the same technique as you used for rotating lines. Type "350". Rotate it by 10°. Position this text to label your 350° line.
